Groundwork is a federation of Trusts in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, each working with their partners to improve the quality of the local environment, the lives of local people and the success of local businesses in areas in need of investment and support.

to build sustainable communities through joint environmental action.

We aim to do this by developing and delivering partnership projects that:

• Enable an integrated and community-led approach to local regeneration.
• Use environmental improvement as a means of achieving social and economic change.
• Help individuals and organisations contribute to sustainable development.

These projects aim to deliver benefits:

• for people – creating opportunities for people to learn new skills and take local action
• for places – creating better, safer and healthier neighbourhoods
• for prosperity – helping businesses and individuals fulfill their potential.

Our rationale for the arts

The arts offer clear benefits to our core activities as facilitators of social inclusion and renewal projects. We believe that the arts can have a positive impact on people, places and prosperity and contribute to the development of sustainable communities.

• enhance the aesthetic quality of an area
• contribute to social cohesion;
• build local capacity for organisation and self determination
• help develop local identity and a sense of belonging
• enhance individual’s confidence, skills and employability
