Working with Artists

Photo : Project Art - Gate-itIf you are going to use an artist, you need to be sure of your reasons for doing so. What sort of project do you want? – you need to be clear both about project aims and objectives, and about the unique regeneration outputs and outcomes that make it purposeful and timely. Why art? Why now? How does it integrate with Groundwork’s broader aims? Sometimes it is simply better not to work with an artist than to use the arts in an ad hoc way.

What art form? There is a mind-boggling range to choose from. Don’t use murals, mosaics and sculptural solutions by default – consider other artforms :

  • New media – film and video, digital arts
  • Literature, poetry and storytelling
  • The performing arts – theatre and music
  • Photography
  • Glass
  • Light and sound

Use the good practice examples and your own web research to see how others have used these to great advantage in regeneration settings. The Mailout website, amongst others, will take you to a multitude of practical examples.

Once you have decided to move forward with an arts based solution, remember that sound project management principles still apply – and that experienced artists are going to have skills and knowledge in this area that are complementary to your own.
